Noise Zones
Noise Zone 1 (NZ 1): less than 65 Ldn
Noise Zone 2 (NZ 2): 65 to 75 Ldn
Noise Zone 3 (NZ 3): greater than 75 Ldn
Ldn = Day-Night Average Sound Level
Accident Potential Zone(APZ)
Clear Zone (CZ): The trapezoidal area lying immediately beyond the end
of the runway and outward along the extended runway centerline for a
distance of 3,000 feet. For U.S. Navy and Marine Corps installations,
the dimensions are 1,500 feet in width at the runway threshold and
2,284 feet in width at the outer edge. The Clear Zone is required for
all active runway ends.
Accident Potential Zone 1 (APZ 1): The rectangular area beyond the Clear
Zone, which still has a measurable potential for aircraft accidents
relative to the Clear Zone. APZ 1 is provided under flight tracks, which
experience 5,000 or more annual operations (departures or approaches).
APZ 1 is typically 3,000 feet in width by 5,000 feet in length and may be
rectangular, or curved to corresond to the shape of the predominant flight
track.
Accident Potential Zone 2 (APZ 2): The rectangular area beyond APZ 1
(or Clear Zone if APZ 1 is not used), which has a measurable potential for
aircraft accidents relative to APZ 1 or the Clear Zone. APZ 2 is always
provided where APZ 1 is required. The dimensions of APZ 2 are typically
3,000 feet wide by 7,000 feet in length, and as with APZ 1, may be curved
to conform with the predominant flight track.
